Planning Board concerned about service facility

EAST GREENWICH - The Planning Board was hoping to see and hear a little more about Flood Auto Group's plan to build a tire and oil change facility at the northeast corner of South County Trail and Frenchtown Road, across from its auto dealership.

Mike Flood, its president, promised the board they would soon.

Girls hockey coming to EG

EAST GREENWICH — East Greenwich’s first venture into the world of co-op interscholastic sports may put five local girls on the ice for R.I. Interscholastic League hockey this winter.

The School Committee voted unanimously Tuesday night to endorse a request by East Greenwich High School Athletic Director Chris Cobain to enter a pilot agreement with Cranston to create a co-op girls’ hockey team, bringing together players from East Greenwich, Cranston West and Cranston East high schools.

East Greenwich Little League to have lights next sumer

EAST GREENWICH — A light snack and lights on a baseball field...somehow, they just go together.

The East Greenwich Little League and East Greenwich Rotary Club hope they go together for local residents, too, in this year's 22nd annual Rotary Citrus Drive.

The Rotary's fundraiser has raised a total of about $250,000 for various community projects over the years, said Mike Gemma, club president.

Veteran's Day Parade on Friday

EAST GREENWICH — The Town of East Greenwich will stage its annual Veterans’ Day Parade on Friday, Nov. 11, commencing at 10 a.m.

The parade steps off at Academy Field and marches through the “Hill” area, turning left onto First Avenue (Route 401). After a brief wreath-laying ceremony at the World War II Memorial on the corner of Cliff Street in memory of the town's deceased veterans who gave their lives in combat, the parade continues North on Main Street to Town Hall for concluding ceremonies at approximately 11 a.m.

A response concerning 'Letters to the Editor'

Due to a severe failure with the office email that occurred on Sunday, any Letters to the Editor were unable to run in this week's edition of the East Greenwich Pendulum. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused.

The office email - cpeditor@ricentral.com, as well as all email inboxes for all the editors and reporters - was still down as of Thursday and we are unsure when it will be back up and running.

Draft for plan just about set

EAST GREENWICH — With the final draft virtually complete, the town’s new comprehensive plan may be ready for both review by the public and approval by the Town Council before the holidays.

Sam Shamoon, the consultant responsible for drawing up the plan which is to guide the town’s development for the next 20 years, was questioned about the final draft by the Planning Board on Oct. 19.

Police warn citizens of possible gang activity

EAST GREENWICH — They may not be harassing you, or walking down Main Street in packs displaying their colors.

But there are gang members passing through East Greenwich every day, whether it’s to work or go about their everyday tasks.

Providence Police Det. Sgt. Michael Wheeler, a member of the department’s anti-gang unit for 16 years and its leader since April 2005, did not raise a red flag over East Greenwich when he recently spoke to members of F.A.C.E.S. (Family Access to Community Empowerment Services) at the East Greenwich Police Station Community Room.

Budget season starting early for 2013

EAST GREENWICH — Just as white Christmas may have arrived early last weekend, fiscal 2013 has knocked on East Greenwich’s door a little earlier then usual.

The budget season officially kicked off Tuesday night with a work session hosted by the Town Council. Municipal department heads and the newly-appointed ad hoc 2013 Budget Advisory Committee also attended a meeting in which a schedule and parameters were laid out for the FY13 budget process.

“The official start of budget season is today,” Town Manager William Sequino Jr. said as he passed out a schedule of the town’s budget process.
