Road race memorializes Tom Cavanagh

EAST GREENWICH – The Cavanagh family, people of faith, does not have to look very far for the signs.
At Thomas Cavanagh’s wake three years ago, two rainbows appeared in a frigid January sky, one inverted like a smile.
And on Saturday, the two winners of the inaugural Cavanagh Scholarship Run – male and female – each wore the Number 9, the former hockey great’s uniform number from his time on the ice in the American Hockey League and the number of siblings in the Cavanagh household.
Chance?
The family – Tom’s four brothers and four sisters – think not.

Mail service on the move

EAST GREENWICH — Local residents will soon have to adjust to a new place where they have to pick up and deliver their mail. But how soon is still yet to be determined.
Joseph Mulvey, the real estate specialist for the United States Postal Service (USPS), presented the Post Office’s plan to close the 19,000-square-foot location at 5775 Post Road, which houses both the retail services and a delivery carrier operation, and move the retail services to another location in town and the delivery carriers to the North Kingstown Post Office – which is approximately four miles south of the current East Greenwich facility.

EAST GREENWICH — Both the East Greenwich Town Council and the East Greenwich School Committee have commended the work of Student Resource Officer Steven Branch while stationed at East Greenwich High School on a regular basis.
So could the idea of a second student resource officer come to fruition within the coming year?

Uncertain future affecting EGFD’s budget process

EAST GREENWICH — Usually at this point of the year, the East Greenwich Fire District is hammering down some numbers and preparing a budget for the upcoming year without much worry.
But this year is much different in that the future of the Fire District’s existence is extremely uncertain given the clock is ticking on when the legislation to merge the Fire Department into the Town of East Greenwich will take effect.

‘Misha’ being accused by Tsarnaev family of radicalizing eldest son

WEST WARWICK— A man who was accused of mentoring the two Boston bombing suspects was traced to an apartment in West Warwick, where he lives with his two parents.
According to the New York Review of Books, Mikhail Allakhverdov, known as “Misha,” was accused by the Tasrnaev family of radicalizing Tamerlan, the oldest of the bombing suspects.

Same-sex marriage bill passes in Senate

PROVIDENCE — History was made Wednesday afternoon as members of the State Senate voted to approve 26-12 a bill that would allow same-sex couples to marry in the state of Rhode Island.
Because of the approval by the senate, the bill will now be heard by the House Judiciary Committee last Tuesday. If approved, it will be passed along for a full floor vote on Thursday, before landing on Governor Lincoln Chafee’s desk to be signed into law. Chafee has already said that if the legislation reaches his desk, he will sign it into law.

Multiple residents shared opinions about gay marriage during 12-hour session

Seeing a sea of people flood the rotunda and the Senate chamber at the State House Thursday evening was quite the profound experience for District 35 State Senator Dawson Hodgson.
It was also one of the many sights during what was an extremely long evening for both the Senate Judiciary Committee and Rhode Island residents who are on both sides of the same-sex marriage debate in the capital city.

Young ‘Jack rabbit’ jumps into action

With help of his mother and volunteers, Jack Ryan donated 150 Easter baskets to Crossroads

It was just a simple idea thought of by Jack Ryan, the son of New England Invitations owner Pamela D’Orsi-Ryan, where he wanted to make Easter baskets for needy children in the area.
Five years ago, the mother-and-son team made approximately eight baskets and donated them to charity. From there, other residents and community members offered to help to expand the gesture.
And boy did it expand.
