Local historians detail the Haunts of Little Rest

SOUTH KINGSTOWN — Unexplained phenomena continue to haunt the historic village of South Kingstown, the area once known as Little Rest Hill. Among the anecdotes from living residents are books flying from shelves, the eerie sounds of rattling chains, and loud voices in empty attic rooms.

Great Pumpkin surfaces in South Kingstown

WAKEFIELD-An 882 pound pumpkin decorates the the outside foyer at Shaw’s Supermarket in Wakefield.
The giant gourd has inspired the general manager at the supermarket to create a contest with three turkey dinners as the top prize.

PIer School Committee says so long to Pinto, Pierson

NARRAGNSETT—At Wednesday evening’s school committee, a teary-eyed Superintendent of Schools Katherine Sipala gave her best wishes to Elizabeth Pinto, Administrator of Student Services, who is leaving Narragansett School System to work in the Rhode Island Department of Education’s Office of Student, Community, and Academic Affairs. Her resignation will be effective January 11, 2013.

Public comment debated at SK School Committee meeting

SOUTH KINGSTOWN—At the bi-monthly meeting Tuesday evening, the South Kingstown School Committee discussed ways to address the needs of public members who bring issues forward that require further conversation. In light of recent verbal altercations during both school committee and South Kingstown Town Council meetings between members of the public and the respective groups, more innovative approaches have been contemplated to bring citizens into the school committee’s decision-making.
Superintendent of Schools Kristen Stringfellow provided her report from the Professional Development and Communications sub-committee, the group responsible for discussing and generating ideas about committee meeting procedures.

Meet the Candidates Forum features Sosnowski, Lindholm

NARRAGANSETT—Incumbent and Democrat V. Susan Sosnowski squared off with challenger John Lindholm for Rhode Island Senate district 37 (South Kingstown, New Shoreham) in an open forum with the public on Wednesday evening. The talk, organized by the Narragansett/South Kingstown Chapter of the League of Women Voters, allowed candidates running in November’s elections the opportunity to detail their plans and viewpoints regarding a number of important issues across the state.

Wright wins Kelso Community Service Award

NARRAGANSETT—Throughout the years, Charles “Ted” Wright has been everything in Narragansett, from a town councilman to a successful local businessman. His nickname, “Mr. Narragansett,” attests to the relationships that Wright has developed within the town. In recognition of his importance to Narragansett, the Narragansett Chamber of Commerce has selected Wright as the 2012 recipient of the James M. Kelso Community Service Award.

Reis named Narragansett teacher of the year

NARRAGANSETT - Narragansett High School Science teacher Adam Reis has spent the last nine years educating students about the natural processes of the earth and its oceans. On Wednesday evening, School Committee members recognized him with the Narragansett Teacher of the Year award for the work he has done in and beyond the classroom.

“I am still reluctant to accept the award based on individual merits,” said Reis. “This is more about representing the groups of our school, such as the science department and the athletics department.”
