Economic development a high priority in SK

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Economic development in South Kingstown is high on the priority list of the members of the South Kingstown Town Council for the next two years.

The members, including two who are in their first term, all cited economic development especially in South Kingstown’s villages, as well as working with South County Hospital and the University of Rhode Island as an issue they wish to address at Monday night’s meeting, their first as a group.

NARRAGANSETT—Handmade crafts, storytelling and lessons in eco-friendly living made Saturday’s Narragansett Indian Tribe Native Arts Festival at the Towers a hands-on celebration of Native American Heritage Month.

Leftover Thanksgiving turkey might bring to mind stories of the native Americans who taught the earliest European settlers how to live off the land in order to survive. But for some Narragansett tribal members, making the most of natural resources isn’t a relic of history—it’s a part of daily life.

Casey's closing after 30 years; will reopen in 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – After 30 years an iconic Wakefield restaurant is closing its doors and changing hands.

Casey’s Bar and Grill on Old Tower Hill Road is closing Dec. 16.

New co-owners Charlie Samaras and Jamie Laplume plan to renovate the space and turn it into Rare Steak and Fish, a combination of a steakhouse and seafood restaurant.

“It happened very quickly, over a matter of three weeks,” Charlie Samaras said Thursday of his recent acquisition of the restaurant.

Newly elected SK officials sworn in

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The newly elected members of the South Kingstown Town Council and the South Kingstown School Committee were sworn in Monday night at the town hall.

The members of the town council, Ella Whaley, Margaret Healy, Carol Hagan McEntee, Jim O’Neill and Paul Donnelly took their oaths and will each serve a two-year term.
