Ogletree's visit to Kingston kicks off Black History Month celebrations

KINGSTON – The renowned Dr. Charles Ogletree, professor and director of The Houston Institute of Harvard Law School, kicked off Black History Month celebrations at the University of Rhode Island Tuesday.

Ogletree discussed post-racial America in the age of President Barack Obama, who was a student of Ogletree’s during his time at Harvard Law School, before a standing room only crowd comprised of students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the public.

Kerbel contract approved by council

NARRAGANSETT - At a special meeting of the Narragansett Town Council on Wednesday evening, the council addressed the contract negotiated and submitted by attorneys for the town and its candidate for interim manager, Richard Kerbel of North Kingstown. In a meeting that lasted less than an hour, the council approved entry into the contract in a 3-2 vote that mirrored that of Monday evening’s contentious discussion on the same matter.

NARRAGANSETT - Monday evening’s meeting of the Narragansett Town Council was reminiscent of a political filibuster as residents lined up at the podium to voice opinion and concerns regarding the town’s inability to find a permanent candidate for the position of town manager. On the agenda and centermost to contention in the standing room only council chambers was a motion to appoint Richard Kerbel as interim manager. In a hotly debated three to two decision, the town council voted to approve Kerbel for the position.

Greek organization gets extension for cultural center at URI

KINGSTON – The University of Rhode Island recently granted a one-time extension to the Hellenic Society Paideia to submit a proposal detailing the organization’s plans to complete a proposed cultural center and outdoor amphitheater at the university.
