Council examines long-term solutions for salt shed

NARRAGANSETTT – Residents received an update on the future of the newly-erected salt shed built on Route 108 on state land near the Dillon Rotary during Monday evening’s town council meeting, including several possible long-term solutions for moving and/or hiding the structure.
The council took a formal tour of the shed and grounds last Tuesday, led by Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) Director Michael Lewis.

UPS delivery mishap injures Co-op manager during move

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - The Alternative Food Co-op has successfully moved across the street into the Kenyon Building, but not without a hitch.
On Dec. 22, just a week before the move was complete, a 700-pound refrigerator fell onto General Manager Christopher Perrotti during a UPS delivery, sending him to the hospital.
Patrolman David Melucci was the first police officer to arrive on the scene and found Perrotti lying on the sidewalk along Kenyon Avenue receiving first aid from South Kingstown Paramedics. Melucci’s police report describes the event as told by Perrotti.

Talks continue on single family home ordinance

NARRAGANSETT – The discussion on the number of unrelated individuals living in a single household was a continued topic on Monday evening for an Ad Hoc Committee for URI Student Rental Problems subcommittee. In numerous other cities and town around the country, the code of ordinances dictates that no more than three unrelated individuals may reside in the same single family home, but Narragansett’s ordinance on the matter is not as clean cut.

BHDDH announces new opioid recovery program

NARRAGANSETT – With the recent news of increasing numbers of drug over dose related deaths around the state and ever-increasing numbers of people overdosing on opioids and narcotic pain relievers such as Oxycontin and Vicodin, the state Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals (BHDDH) and the Anchor Recovery Community Center have developed a program known as AnchorED to address this issue. The program places recovery coaches in emergency rooms to immediately provide support to individuals just recovering from a drug overdose.

According to Google, which released a report Tuesday on the top trending terms of the year, the top term overall was "Robin Williams," after the well-known and popular comedian died in August. No. 2 was "World Cup," the global soccer tournament held in Brazil in June. Third on the list was "Ebola," the highly contagious virus.

School committee presents $60 million budget

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - The school committee presented its $60 million budget to the town council Monday night, highlighting three new programs that Superintendent Kristen Stringfellow hopes to launch in the upcoming school year: dual-language immersion, a 1:1 device program and a cost-sharing program that would assign a school resource police officer to Curtis Corner Middle School.

CCMS parent says police presence does not create safer school environment

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - The potential presence of a police officer at Curtis Corner Middle School brought Alicia Collins, parent of a Curtis Corner Middle School student, to address the school committee and town council at Monday night’s meeting on the state of the district’s handling of mental disorders.
She began by noting that it was the day after the second anniversary of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting that took the lives of 20 children and six adults.

Council tables motion to award bid for Kinney Bungalow HVAC

December 17, 2014

NARRAGANSETT – Chair of the Land Conservancy Trust Jill Lawler came before the Narragansett Town Council on Monday evening to request approval for awarding a bid for architectural and engineering services for the Kinney Bungalow HVAC project to Architectura, Inc. in the amount of $22,000. The council ultimately voted 4-1 to table the motion until the project could be discussed more in depth with members of the land trust group. President Pro-Tem Susan Cicilline-Buonanno was solely opposed.

Two SK men arrested for shooting out windows

December 17, 2014

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - South Kingstown Police have arrested and charged a 27 year-old man and a 19 year-old man on 12 misdemeanor charges after they allegedly fired a BB gun from a car at several houses on Oak Street and the surrounding area, shattering four windows and a glass door.
Jerome Perry, of Woodruff Ave. and Tyler Perry-Hall, of Dobson Road, were each arrested on four charges of firing across a highway, four charges of firing in a compact area, and four charges of malicious injury to property - all misdemeanors.

Council to wait and see on RhodeMap RI

December 10, 2014

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - A resolution to the town council submitted by a member of the public brought nearly an hour of discussion on RhodeMap RI to the council chambers on Monday night, drawing comment from Town Manager Stephen Alfred, Director of Planning Vincent Murray and three members of the council.
The resolution, submitted by Martha Stamp, was written to postpone the Dec. 11 adoption of RhodeMap RI, a controversial economic development plan created by the state planning division.
