Unified basketball a hit at CHS

COVENTRY — Coventry Head Coach Stephen McKanna cheered on his Unified Basketball team as they played their last game of the season Wednesday afternoon against Warwick Vets.
Unified Basketball falls under the Project Unify program, which looks to keep students with intellectual disabilities active through sports and is endorsed by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League and the Rhode Island Department of Education.

Coventry NECAP scores hit the mark

COVENTRY — According to Coventry’s NECAP numbers, most of the district’s schools are above the state average, with a few exceptions.
According to the report, the majority of reading and math testing for grades three through six in all five elementary schools (Blackrock, Tiogue, Hopkins Hill, Washington Oak and Western Coventry) surpassed state averages.

CHS carpentry kids build for tomorrow

COVENTRY — Carpentry students at Coventry High School took what they learned in the classroom and constructed a giant gazebo, which ultimately benefited the Tomorrow Fund.

Carpentry teacher, Scott Leavitt explained that this was the sixth year his junior and senior students had built a structure to raise money for the organization.

He said it all began one day when a woman approached him in the carpentry shop at school.

“I didn’t know who she was but her mother worked at the high school,” he said. “She came in and asked if we could build a kids playhouse for the Tomorrow Fund.”

Coventry karate studio produces pair of heroes

COVENTRY — Two students from USA Karate were able to use what they learned during their training to remain calm and collected as each of them saved a life just days apart.

Sean Lambert, 10, is in his second year of training at the karate school in Coventry and currently holds the rank of purple belt.

He never thought what he learned during those two years would help save his father’s life.

On the way home from a family vacation in Pennsylvania, Sean said the gas tank on the vehicle began falling out.
