Brooke Macomber feels right at home at Coventry High

COVENTRY— Coventry High School Assistant Principal Brooke Macomber was named the 2014 Assistant Principal of the Year after being nominated by Principal Michael Hobin.
Like the Principal of the Year competition, which was won by Hobin this year, a board of directors for the Rhode Island Association of School Principals (RIASP) visited the school to speak to students, parents, teachers and the administration before making their decision.

Fire displaces family from home

December 6, 2013

COVENTRY—A two-alarm fire in Coventry displaced a family of six after flames broke out in their downstairs kitchen Monday night.
Central Coventry Fire Chief Andrew Baynes explained that the male homeowner called 911 at 8:06 p.m. after he returned to his home at 9 Grant Drive and noticed a fire in the basement of the raised ranch.
He said firefighters from Central Coventry arrived shortly after and quickly surveyed the area to ensure nobody was still inside.

Victim of accident dies in hospital

December 6, 2013

COVENTRY— A local man died from his injuries last week after being hit by a vehicle on Nov. 23.
Lt. John Shields, spokesperson for the Coventry Police Department, explained that on Monday, Nov. 25 Erik Johnson, 43, of Coventry passed away at Rhode Island Hospital after being struck two days earlier by a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old Coventry girl.
Police stated that Johnson was walking on Washington Street after 6:30 p.m. when he was hit by the car. He suffered a serious head injury.
The girl, whose name will not be released because of her age, was taken to Kent Hospital and released.

Coventry Community Food Bank has a friend in local business

November 22, 2013

COVENTRY— For the seventh year, Coventry Lumber raised funds during its golf tournament at the beginning of September to assist the highly utilized Coventry Community Food Bank.
The golf tournament, which saw approximately 110 participants this year, was created by Co-owner of Coventry Lumber Mike Durand as way to raise money for the food bank.

COVENTRY — A meeting that began without an issue quickly exploded into shouts, accusations and arguments when the board’s chairman refused to hear any one with public comment after one resident, Steven Faye, demanded answers for what he called the board’s lack of action with helping the fire district.

COVENTRY — Robert Thibeault’s got some years of experience serving the town and 15 years of professional financial experience, which made him the perfect fit for the Coventry Finance Director.
Thibeault has been a resident of Coventry for 20 years and has served on the town council in 2006, the sewer sub commission and most recently the planning board.

COVENTRY — Robert Thibeault’s got some years of experience serving the town and 15 years of professional financial experience, which made him the perfect fit for the Coventry Finance Director.

“After being employed at the University of Rhode Island for the past seven years, this is something I’ve worked toward because I wanted to take the next step and new challenges,” he said.

Gaudet steps down from his post

COVENTRY— Beginning his military career at the age of 17, Capt. Richard Gaudet traveled to numerous countries and fought in multiple wars and prior to his recent retirement he was the last Vietnam veteran to be an active-duty Rhode Island National Guardsman.

Capt. Gaudet, who resides in Coventry, enlisted into the Army in 1971, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

“I think ever since I was a child I was interested in the military,” he said. “My grandfather served in World War I, my father served in World War II and my older brother served in Vietnam.”

More than just luck o' the Irish for Kelly Dance School

COVENTRY— Two students from The Kelly School of Irish Dance were able to secure a qualifying place in the world championships after competing in California last weekend.

Julie Cronin, a mother actively involved with the dance studio, explained that on Oct. 5, Megan Quirk of East Greenwich and Claire Jalbert of Westerly traveled to Redlands, California with owner of the studio Meghan Kelly to participate in the first annual Southern California Open Feis.
