Thrumming along, threading the way

WARWICK, R.I. – Hookers are coming to a local library and they are encouraged to do so.
They have heard all the off-color jokes, so don’t even start. They also have heard all the compliments.
The Little Rhody Thrummers – the Rhode Island Chapter of the Association of Traditional Rug Hooking Artists – will hold its next big show on Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Warwick Public Library, the very first time these hookers have filled this particular building.

Coventry students enter Robotics Challenge 2011

A dozen or so local students will be among the technological gurus that will be converging at Roger Williams University this weekend.
The youngsters are part of a growing population of robotics enthusiasts that will be taking part in the annual Lego League Robotics Challenge. This year’s event, the Body Forward Championship Tournament, will be held on Saturday, January 15th.

School budget is presented to council

The school committee met with the town council Monday night to again discuss projected budget needs for fiscal year 2011-2012.
Superintended of schools Michael Convery and the school department’s finance director Robin Reasor presented on behalf of the schools.
In addition to a list of items cut from the schools over the last few years, salary projections, detailed student enrollment projections their presentation included a capital budget request fiscal year 2011-2012.

Daffodil Days a source of hope

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The daffodil is the first flower of spring, letting us know that life re-emerges after very harsh treatment through the dead of winter.
Such evident symbolism has been the decades-old landmark of the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days, which recruit volunteers now through March when these flowers spring to life.

Night for incoming freshman at CHS

Coventry High School will be holding it’s first ever Community Night for incoming freshman this Wednesday.
Lynn Burke, Assistant Principal for Student Services, is calling it a vehicle for communicating with the eighth grade students who will be starting high school this fall.

Track team takes the plunge

The new year has started and for one committed group of student athletes a new tradition has begun.
The Coventry High School indoor track team participated on Jan. 1 in the polar bear plunge that takes place locally and all across the country.
Their group specifically, took part in the Newport Polar Bear’s Plunge raising money for A Wish Come True.

Beyond the lighted trees and tidal wave of craft fairs, there is the annual re-appearance of red and green M&Ms, half gallons of suspiciously thick eggnog, the ubiquitous boxes of clementines guests bring to our homes and, of interest to me today, the disappearance of real estate signs.
