Richmond to file suit on school committee representation

January 8, 2015

RICHMOND — On Tuesday night, the town council decided to proceed with filing suit in Superior Court to change the Chariho School Committee membership from 11 to 12. First, however, the council authorized the town solicitor to send letters indicating the town’s intentions to the Charlestown Town Council, the Hopkinton Town Council, and the Chariho School Committee. Richmond will file suit in early March if the other three entities do not respond by February 26.

One more chance for the old Ashaway School

HOPKINTON — The future of the old elementary Ashaway School is still in question. Last September, after Crossman Engineering’s evaluation of the building revealed extensive deterioration requiring expensive repairs, the town council reluctantly concluded that the building should be razed.
However, at Monday night’s meeting, Town Councilor Sylvia Thompson reopened the discussion and suggested hiring a real estate company to find a renter or buyer for the property.
“It’s just kind of last ditch effort. It should be low cost,” she said.

Tensions high during Chariho budget workshop

WOOD RIVER JUNCTION — Superintendent of Chariho Regional Schools Barry Ricci kicked off the budget season by presenting his FY16 budget to the school committee on Saturday morning at the Middle School Library. The meeting was the first of four budget workshops held by School Committee as it works to develop and approve a budget that will go to a public vote later in the Spring.

Tax limit sought on affordable housing rentals

December 11, 2014

CHARLESTOWN — On Monday night, the town council approved the preparation of an ordinance that would limit property taxes on deed-restricted low-income housing to eight percent of the gross rental income.
Washington County Community Development Corporation (WCCDC) Chair Geoffrey A. Marchant explained that his group was applying for low-income housing tax credits for a total of 50 units of affordable rental housing in Charlestown, Richmond, and Exeter. Charlestown’s component will be Shannock Village Cottages at 1639a Shannock Road that will comprise 11 low-income rental units.
