Non-renewal letters forthcoming in SK

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Due to the global fiscal crisis and unknown revenue streams, 144 teachers will be receiving non-renewal letters in the coming days after the school committee approved Superintendent Kristen Stringfellow's recommendation Tuesday night.

Newport man charged with five felonies for home invasion in SK

A male-female duo have made off with more than a $1,000 worth of items from the Coventry Wal-Mart.
Coventry Police are investigating, but are asking the public for help in identifying the suspects.
The store has video surveillance of both the male and the female suspects and have posted the images on Rhode Island Most Wanted, but are hoping that someone will reach out to them to help the detectives working the case to identify the suspects.

That's the sound more than 15,000 students throughout Rhode Island will soon hear as they pour their pocket change into collection jars to support Olive Garden's 17th-annual Pasta for Pennies program benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) School & Youth campaign. Last year, Olive Garden's Pasta for Pennies collected $6.1 million nationally, bringing the total amount donated since the program's inception to more than $53 million.

Would repeal of Caruolo Act have ramifications for SK?

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – A state representative has proposed repealing the controversial Caruolo Act, which allows school committees to file suit against their taxpayers when they overspend their budgets, something South Kingstown isn't too worried about.

Rep. Patricia L. Morgan, R- West Warwick, Coventry introduced the legislation to eliminate the law that she said is a costly and lengthy method of resolving funding disputes.

Robotics team performs well

A team of students from Coventry High School secured a spot in the top five at a statewide annual high school robotics competition last weekend.
The students, members of the Coventry High School Robotics Club, were one of the more than 30 teams to enter in this year’s For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology Tech Challenge.
