Politics as Usual: Raimondo spoke too soon regarding pension reform

General Treasurer Gina Raimondo would be well advised not to put too much work into her pension reform plan before a judge rules in the case now before the Superior Court about whether employees who are vested in the pension system have a property right in their promised pension benefits.
I realize the prevailing passion is to say “screw those state employees and their unions, what part of ‘there is no money’ don’t they understand?’
And that is a fine stance for someone to make a political point or a talk-show rant. But the law is the law and a judge is going to have to go by the law.

KINGSTON—Two teams squared off against each other on the moist soccer field, one in red and the other in green. The play began and it was a game, a real one, as the crowd looked on and cheered. They shouted for their brothers and sons and friends as though a crowd at a bullfight.
On this Saturday morning, they cheered for the participants of the Special Olympics.

SK home invasion suspects indicted

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The four suspects charged with the burglary, robbery and conspiracy of a South Kingstown home and resident on Feb. 4 were indicted Wednesday.
The Washington County Grand Jury handed up an indictment charging Brandon Kluth, 20, of 16 John Chafee Blvd., Newport, Stefon Jenkins, 20, of 18 John Chafee Blvd., Newport, Brittney Flesia, 19, of 18 Barnacle Drive, South Kingstown, and Jaylon Butler, 19, of 201 Rogers Lane, Middletown, each with one count of burglary, first degree robbery and conspiracy. Kluth, Butler, and Jenkins were also charged with one count each of assault with a dangerous weapon.

NORTH KINGSTOWN–Noriko Whittaker is a tiny woman with an enormous voice, as anyone who heard her soaring, heartfelt vocal rendition of “God Bless America” at the Lafayette Band’s May 21 “Salute to the Armed Forces” concert can confirm.
“I was born with this big voice,” says the native of Hokkaido, Japan, laughing. “My mother said she could hear my voice from blocks away. She would say, ‘Don’t talk so much outside.’”

NARRAGANSETT—The streets of Narragansett will be filled with family and friends, walking and running for a great cause. The Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation is holding its 12th annual Run/Walk and Family Fun Day this Sunday, June 12.
Beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Narragansett High School, participants of all skill levels will have the opportunity to compete in a friendly manner on a predetermined and beautiful course throughout town.
“Aside from the opportunity to celebrate Katie’s life, we wanted a social event which brought together the community and to have fun,” said John DeCubellis, Katie’s father.

Local principal charged with DUI

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The 60-year-old principal of Fishing Cove Elementary School has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence.
Edna M. “Edie” Dunn, of 50 Pine River Dr., was stopped by North Kingstown police at 12:20 a.m. on June 3, after an officer observed a silver SUV drifting from lane to lane and then driving in both lanes simultaneously on Post Road near Namcook Road.
