Students crack the codes at Forest Park Elementary

NORTH KINGSTOWN—Walking past Fourth Grade teacher Kim Johnson’s classroom, one might think class was finishing as students gave fist pumps and celebratory shouts of ‘yes!’ At Forest Park Elementary School on Tuesday, however, students were participating in the ‘Hour of Code’, a nationwide event aimed at improving interest and ability in computer science.
“You’re all computer scientists already!” said instructor Bea Lukens to Johnson’s students.

EG Town Council votes to postpone RhodeMapRI

EAST GREENWICH- Four of the five East Greenwich Town Council members have signed a letter to request that the vote to adopt RhodeMap RI be extended, giving cities and towns more time to review the roughly 160-page document.

Tax limit sought on affordable housing rentals

CHARLESTOWN — On Monday night, the town council approved the preparation of an ordinance that would limit property taxes on deed-restricted low-income housing to eight percent of the gross rental income.
Washington County Community Development Corporation (WCCDC) Chair Geoffrey A. Marchant explained that his group was applying for low-income housing tax credits for a total of 50 units of affordable rental housing in Charlestown, Richmond, and Exeter. Charlestown’s component will be Shannock Village Cottages at 1639a Shannock Road that will comprise 11 low-income rental units.

RI Poet Laureate readies Chariho students for competition

WOOD RIVER JUNCTION — The stage was bare except for a single microphone on a stand, highlighted by a spotlight. Nearby, students talked quietly, each holding a slip of paper with the poem they had chosen to recite for the Poetry Out Loud Competition. Although they’d been practicing for weeks, on Saturday students recited their poems before Rhode Island Poet Laureate Rick Benjamin, who provided constructive criticism and coaching.

Council to wait and see on RhodeMap RI

December 10, 2014

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - A resolution to the town council submitted by a member of the public brought nearly an hour of discussion on RhodeMap RI to the council chambers on Monday night, drawing comment from Town Manager Stephen Alfred, Director of Planning Vincent Murray and three members of the council.
The resolution, submitted by Martha Stamp, was written to postpone the Dec. 11 adoption of RhodeMap RI, a controversial economic development plan created by the state planning division.
