Construction of new URI dorm unfinished

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - A new $42 million residence hall will not be ready for students to move in next month at the University of Rhode Island.

Construction is not yet complete on Hillside Hall, the university’s newest dormitory. The 120,000 square foot, five story structure was scheduled to house 429 students beginning this fall, who have now been advised to find other living arrangements until the dorm opens in October.

SK School Committee proposes bylaw changes

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The South Kingstown School Committee is proposing significant changes to its bylaws, which were reviewed at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The changes will impact the meeting schedule, alter community involvement on subcommittees and solidify the “understanding” that “committee meetings are meetings held before the public but are not meetings with the public.”

Langevin lauds $500K URI grant

KINGSTON - Rhode Island Second District Rep. Jim Langevin has been very vocal on all topics concerning the nation’s cybersecurity and where it is headed. Langevin, who is co-founder of the Congressional Cybersecurity Caucus, recently criticized republican senators for their efforts to block the Cybersecuity Act of 2012, which barley failed to secure the Senate’s two-thirds majority on Aug. 2.

School committee reaches agreement with charter

WOOD RIVER JUNCTION - The Chariho School Committee voted on Tuesday night to unanimously approve and release a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the district and The Compass School, a charter school in Kingston. The MOU provides finality to almost three years of litigation between the two education entities.

Costa recovering after emergency surgery scare

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Doreen Costa is the local version of the modern woman’s Energizer Bunny, always on the move.
But the Republican state representative who serves North Kingstown and Exeter in the state General Assembly was stopped in her tracks by acute pain on Aug. 2. Today she’s still recovering – and very grateful – after a hasty trip to the hospital resulted in emergency surgery and a cancer scare.
