Players take advantage of good conditions on day one

August 15, 2013

CRANSTON—For many of the Southern Rhode Island locals competing in the 82nd Rhode Island Open this week at Alpine Country Club in Cranston, Tuesday’s opening round was unforgiving. And it had nothing to do with the weather.
“It was perfect,” said John Rainone, who plays out of North Kingstown Golf Club. “It wasn’t like it was raining heavy or anything. It was the perfect conditions to play in as you can see from some of the scores.
“You couldn’t ask for an easier day weather-wise to play golf, so no excuses there.”

URI’s Fiorenzano barely makes cut

CRANSTON – When the rain came through on Tuesday morning, it made the course soft. Ideal conditions to shoot the number of low scores that adorned the top of the leader board through the opening round of the 82nd Rhode Island Open Championship at Alpine Country Club.
The Sun came out on Wednesday, though, and with it came the wind, which made for a much different story.

Costaregni happy to be playing golf

CRANSTON—It was a tough spring for 2013 Prout graduate Matt Costaregni.
An injury during the winter set him back for the start of the season and just as he had returned to the top of his game another one dashed his hopes of an individual state golf title.
“Collar bone, I broke it skiing,” Costaregni said of the injury that plagued him to start the spring. “Then like a week before states I broke my ankle playing basketball and missed two months from that so I’ve really only been back for a month or so.

CRANSTON—After playing in a number of tournaments together this summer Charlie Blanchard and McKinley Slade were once again on the course at the same time Tuesday and Wednesday for the 82nd Rhode Island Open Championships.
Rest assured though, it won’t be the last time the two see each other.
In just a few short weeks Slade – a 2013 graduate of South Kingstown High – will be off to Bryant University to continue his academic and golf career, the latter under Blanchard’s tutelage.

Former NK players lend a hand

RUMFORD—Senioritis isn’t an actual medical condition but anyone who has walked the halls of a high school during the spring can tell you that it does in fact exist.
Most seniors spend their last few months of high school counting down the days until graduation and once they’re out, they’re gone.
After four years of linoleum floors, detention slips and research papers the last thing any soon-to-be college freshman wants to do is anything associated with high school.

URI offense searching for right tempo

August 15, 2013

KINGSTON — The beginning of Saturday’s scrimmage exhibited the chicken-or-the-egg conundrum the up-tempo Rhode Island offense faces this season.
The Rams want to run their zone-read attack at a fast pace, but they can’t play fast if they aren’t make plays. However, the Rams make plays when they are moving quickly and keeping the defense off-balance.

Frosh Saintfleur getting attention

August 15, 2013

KINGSTON — Elijah Saintfleur has plenty of time to earn a starting spot on the Rhode Island offense, but he isn’t wasting any of it.
The red-shirt freshman tight end from West Warwick was one of the stars of the off-season training program who also had a superb spring game. Saintfleur impressed coach Joe Trainer to the point that Saintfleur started Saturday’s first scrimmage of camp playing with the first unit.
